THE ULTIMATE BEEF PIE AND SAUSAGE ROLL CREATED BY EST. HEAD CHEF ALEX WOOLLEY
Originally hailing from Wigan in the North West of England, any rugby league fan worth their salt will know that I’m a massive pie eater! So imagine my delight when I found out that Merivale is launching Bert’s Pies, a new brand venture producing Merivale’s version of the perfect beef pie and sausage roll.
Created by Alex Woolley, head chef of the iconic three-hatted est., Bert’s Pies will be available to enjoy from Monday 5 August at Palings Kitchen & Bar, The Royal George, Establishment, Hotel CBD, York 75, Grand Hotel, Angel Hotel, Wynyard Hotel and to take away from Lorraine’s Patisserie. To celebrate the launch, Merivale will also host Pie Week, 5-11 August with one thousand pies to give away and a special dine-in offer.
Bert’s Pies, affectionately named after the nickname given to Merivale’s style guru and chief pie-lover Bettina Hemmes, has been a labour of love – created in est.’s 3-hatted kitchen, tried and tested by Merivale’s talented chefs, tweaked until just right and baked to perfection.
The Bert’s Pies venture began earlier this year when Merivale set out to make the perfect pie and sausage roll to serve across its many eateries. Home to some of the most well respected culinary masterminds in the country, Merivale set a challenge and eleven pie-loving Merivale chefs took to their kitchens to create their own special version of the Aussie classic. Judging was conducted by an internal panel, including Merivale CEO Justin Hemmes, who took into consideration the votes received at March Into Merivale’s ‘Go The Pies’ ticketed taste test event where 480 pies and sausage rolls were consumed and scrutinised by 70 diners.
Alex Woolley, who took out both categories with his incredible beef pie and pork & fennel sausage roll, said: “I’ve always believed that someone who truly loves pies makes the best pies, a high level of love and care has to go into it making it just right from the pastry to the meat to the sauce. It took me, and the tastebuds of est.’s 17 chefs, three weeks and 80 pies to perfect our version using classic flavours and good quality ingredients”.
Justin Hemmes said: “Bert’s Pies is an exciting initiative for Merivale and something entirely different for the business. Alex really has created what we all agree is the perfect pie and sausage roll and I can’t wait for everyone to get stuck in and try a Bert’s Pie for themselves”.
To celebrate the launch of Bert’s Pies, Merivale will host Pie Week, Monday 5 – Sunday 11 August. The week long pie-fest will see 1000 Bert’s Pies and Sausage Rolls given away to lucky customers at Lorraine’s Patisserie, Establishment and Hotel CBD, as well as a special dine-in offer where guests can order a Bert’s Pie for lunch or dinner and receive a free James Squire One Fifty Lashes Pale Ale.
