Last week SydneySocial101 was invited to the preview screening of Hidden Universe 3D at the IMAX in Darling Harbour. When I was younger, for about a year, I wanted to be an astronomer. If I had seen this documentary back then, then I would have kept that passion alive for a lot longer.
The film is narrated by Miranda Richardson who talks about the world’s most powerful telescopes and what they have been able to accomplish through them. It shows the billions of stars and how they are born through clouds of gas. Then what happens when a star explodes in a supernova and what is left behind.
I do enjoy a good documentary like Blue Planet and Planet Earth. Besides not seeing any animals, or aliens, those are the closet programmes I can compare it to. It is incredible how close they can now film and take pictures of the landscape of Mars. The best part was that it took you to the edge of the universe, well as far as the telescopes are able to see. You can’t help but wonder what is beyond that and if it ever stops. The vivid colours are incredible. Especially when you see the large number of other galaxies that are bigger than our own, The Milky Way. You can not comprehend how small you are in the universe until you see this.
I have seen 3D films in at the IMAX before but they never immersed me in the environment like this did. At times you really felt that you were moving through space and it was a surreal feeling. I did see some people reach out to try and touch the stars. Not me obviously, I know it was only a film!!…….
One of the best facts I heard of the night is that 45% of Americans don’t know that the sun is a star. Shocking I know!!
SydneySocial101 gives Hidden Universe 3D a 9/10. If you have 45 minutes to spare then i highly recommend you seeing this. Definitely one for all the family.
Syrus Wynne attended the screening in behalf of Sydney Social 101.
