Leichhardt’s iconic hotel, The Royal, has unveiled its newly refurbished upper level – The Royal Botanical – a casual new dining room, bar and garden terrace with district views across Leichhardt that’s set to be the perfect place for lunch or dinner seven days a week.
The 45-seat room has been completely overhauled with bistro-style tables and chairs, comfy booth seating, botanical themed prints on the walls and hanging baskets. Adjoining the main room is a light and airy outdoor garden terrace that seats 25 with wall-to-wall plants including herbs, edible flowers and succulents that make it the perfect spot for relaxing with a cold one and a bite to eat.
Created by new head chef Manish Shrestha, who earned his stripes at some of Sydney’s top venues including The Glenmore, Manly Wine and The Winery, the mouthwatering new food menu features traditional, comforting pub fare that will be a welcome addition to the Norton Street food strip.
The menu is split into Starters & Shares including crowd pleaser salt and pepper squid, hot wings and platters; The Greens including a fun twist on the traditional Caesar salad; The Buns with the mouthwatering Royal burger, pulled pork roll and steak roll; and The Eats for those craving hearty pub grub from staple chicken schnitzel and top quality Black Angus sirloin steak to crispy skin salmon and gnocchi. Kids are well catered for with a Tiny Tots menu and there will even be a traditional roast dinner, perfect for the whole family every Sunday.
The bar has a solid selection of craft beers and a carefully selected wine list, featuring top drops from Australia, New Zealand and Europe. A fresh and fruity range of cocktails are also available for those looking for something a little special, including the The Royal Iced Tea, Garden Spritz, Hendrick’s Tea Cup and twist on an old Bloody Mary classic -Mary Botanical.
The Royal Botanical is perfect for functions of all sizes with various spaces available to suit events from 20 seated to 150 cocktail style. The downstairs main bar and sports bar are also available for a range of functions and events.
The historic hotel, which has been part of the fabric of Norton Street since 1886, was taken over by Sydney hospitality group W. Short Hotel Group in July and has been undergoing the first stages of refurbishment across the premises, including the downstairs bar and gaming area.
Martin Short, CEO of W. Short Hotel Group, explains: “The Royal has been at the heart of Leichhardt for over 125 years, so when we took over ownership of the venue, one of the first things we wanted to do was find out what the locals wanted and ensure that any changes we made would benefit the local community.
“We hope that by having given the venue a fresh new look, a fantastic new menu and wider selection at the bar, that we can breath new life back into The Royal for locals, as well as bringing custom back into the Norton Street area as a whole.”
W. Short Hotel Group owns and operates some of NSW’s most iconic pubs and hotels, including The Australian Heritage Hotel and The Glenmore in The Rocks, Scubar and The Seabreeze Hotel in South West Rocks.
