Sydney Social 101 was invited to attained the launch of the brand new Cointreau Noir, the party was hosted at Café del Mar which is always a delight and a current personal favourite when it comes to Sydney bars.
The bar was effortlessly transformed into a luxurious and elegant oasis within the Sydney CBD.
With the kitchen delivering culinary delights throughout the evening, with the canapes very well received, in particular the wild mushroom risotto.
It was great to see one of the Cointreau dynasty at the party for the unveiling of the new drink, followed by a cocktail demonstration.
All in all it was a great night had by the numerous attendees and I would definitely recommend the delicious new drink with an infusion of Cointreau and Cognac, best served straight
La Maison Cointreau, founded in 1849 and known for Cointreau, the iconic square-bottled orange liqueur, has launched a new variant Cointreau Noir.
Bernadette Langlais, the Cointreau’s master distiller, got inspired by “Majestic”, a premium blend of Cointreau orange liqueur and cognac crafted by Edouard Cointreau in the early 1900s. She then decided to give a rebirth to Majestic, adding her own personal touch to enrich the product experience and create “Cointreau Noir”.
Cointreau Noir is the ultimate blend of Cointreau orange liquor and Fine Champagne Cognac: it is an irresistible marriage of Cointreau’s perfect balance of sweet and bitter orange peels and world’s finest cognac, Rémy Martin. Bernadette Langlais enriched the original recipe by adding macerations of nuts and almonds, bringing even more sophisticated aromas and complexity. A touch of spice, rounded with notes of vanilla, honey and nuts allows for a mellow and deliciously smooth drink with a clean finish.
The perfect balance between a liqueur and a cognac, the spirit appeals to dark spirit connoisseurs and cocktail lovers alike. The symphony of zesty orange liqueur and smooth mellow cognac can be enjoyed neat or in simple long drinks like with cloudy apple and soda. Brand Manager Amanda Scarlett said: “We are proud to launch this magnificent spirit. The blend of Cointreau and Rémy Martin Cognac adds a unique depth and flavour, which can only be created when combined in this exclusive creation by Cointreau’s Master Distiller Bernadette Langlais.”

In the spirit of the March into Merivale launch party, ivy is throwing a barbeque party like no other. For $45 you get eight tokens to redeem on a selection of delicious food, cocktails and wines from new Manly restaurant, Papi Chulo, plus Palings and Sunee’s. Large cuts of meats will be slathered in marinades and spice-rubs, then slow cooked for more than six hours. The result will be meat so tender it melts in your mouth with an intense pit barbeque flavour straight from the American Deep South. Of course, it’s not a party without live music and DJ’s. You’ll experience a sensational live set by the African Columbian rock and roots band, Watussi, who are gearing up for their headlining set at the Byron Bay Bluesfest in April.

Last night Sydney Social 101 was invited to Establishment Main Bar last night as it was transformed into a sweet tooth’s heaven for ‘Just Desserts’, a sensational sweet event as part of March into Merivale.
We were greeted with over 400 dessert lovers arrived at the historic bar to enjoy mouth-watering dessert stations from est., Mr. Wong, Ms G’s and Lorraine’s Patisserie, alongside delicious dessert wines and espresso martinis.
Multi-award winning chef Peter Doyle, acclaimed pastry chef Lorraine Godsmark and Ms G’s head chef Paul Donnelly served up tantalising treats including Hazelnut parfait and apricot honey compote; Hot banana, nutella and salted caramel spring roll; strawberry ice cream with jasmine yoghurt and black sesame; and Swiss meringue roll served on banana and passionfruit confit.
It was a great evening, even if you don’t have a sweet tooth!
Once a full service garage – now a full service restaurant and bar, the highly anticipated Riley St Garage has rolled up its doors this month for gastronomic service & repairs.
Located at 55 Riley Street, Woolloomooloo, Sydney, the 200-seat restaurant is the vision of Brody Petersen from The Parlour Group who brought The Flying Squirrel and The Stuffed Beaver to Sydney’s bar scene.
Chef Regan Porteous, previously from Maze London, Dubai and Hong Kong and bar manager Bobby Carey, ex-Shady Pines Saloon head up Petersen’s new venture.
The heart of the restaurant is the Grand Bar, which harks back to their motto, ‘I’d rather eat in a bar, than drink in a restaurant’.
“I wanted the restaurant to have a New York Meatpacking District look and feel, with a huge central bar seating 30 guests, and two distinct dining areas. I believe the restaurant will also significantly add to the recent revitalisation of the William Street area,” said Petersen.
Riley St Garage’s modern Australian cuisine, will focus on share plates, along with a spectacular oyster bar. Behind the bar you will find Canadian and Irish whiskey, craft beers and an original cocktail list featuring the classics, with a twist.
Located in a beautiful art deco building, Riley St Garage was designed by Richard Alexander of RAD Studios. It will maintain its original 1910 industrial warehouse elements whilst incorporating spectacular design finishes including rich leathers, steel, brass and copper detailing.
Sydney’s Annual Search for the Hottest Man in a Suit
The annual search for Sydney’s Hottest Man in a Suit returns – with extra sizzle. Bars March is holding its second Mr CBD, the unique male beauty competition for men in suits, where flirting is all for a good cause: Animal Welfare League NSW!
The competition is currently open for entries from the general public, so either enter yourself if you’re a savvy suit-wearing gent, or nominate someone you know, to be in with a chance of being the second Bars March Mr CBD winner!
Six finalists will be selected and invited to parade at the charity gala final at The Argyle, The Rocks, on Thursday 20th March, which is being hosted by Bars March brand ambassadors TV personality and vet Dr Katrina Warren, and former CLEO Bachelor of The Year David Whitehill, who is no stranger to winning male beauty contests!
At the gala the audience will put their hands in their pockets to bid to choose the winner, and the finalist attracting the highest overall bid wins the Mr CBD 2014 title. As well as the title Mr CBD will also win a fabulous bespoke prize consisting of an Institchu tailored suit, Pugnacious George Essentials Pack and an incredible gentleman’s SpaQ package from QT Hotels. All the proceeds from the auction go to AWL NSW.

Last week Sydney Social 101 was invited to preview Merivale’s ‘Around the World with Eighty Whites’ – which took guests on a global expedition of white wine discovery at ivy’s The Den on Wednesday night.
Merivale’s Master Sommelier, Franck Moreau, personally selected eighty white and sparkling wines from countries as far and wide as Chile, Austria, France, Greece, Romania and Japan!
Merivale’s sommeliers as well as a host of leading wine importers wore on hand to guide the guests around some of the finest and most unique grapes from around the world.
Executive Chef, Richard Purdue, designed a delicious canapé selection to compliment the range of wines including pea, mint and ricotta arancini, sofa taco with salmon ceviche, chill chicken sliders and of course, an almighty cheese table.
It was a great night and the wine was out of this world! Once again Merivale never fails to deliver!
On Tuesday night Kirribilli’s first small bar and restaurant The Botanist, which is owned by Applejack Hospitality, who is behind successful Sydney restaurants Bondi Hardware and recently opened SoCal Neutral Bay, held a huge birthday party to celebrate turning one year old. Over 200 locals, friends, media and celebrities attended, including Teri Haddy, Demi Harman, Tim Blackwell, Tara Rushton, Nacho Pop, and Scott Gooding, and the event was a lively night of celebration which continued late into the evening! Sydney Social 101 was there to provide a sneak peek into the VIP party!
Upon arrival guests were treated to a choice of two cocktails, the Barrington Boutique – made with Ketel One, lime juice, raspberry jam sugar syrup, cranberry juice and a dash rhubarb bitters, and Fothergill Punch – consisting of Pampero Especial, lime juice, orgeat, pineapple juice and a dash of cherry bitters. Charles De Fere French sparkling, wines by Geoff Merrill and Vale Ale & Vale IPA were also served. James Privett, Applejack Group Executive Chef, served guests delicious tasters from the new autumn menu such as the ever popular classic beef sliders, white fish ceviche lettuce cups, broccoli & blue cheese arancini, lamb & harissa sausage rolls and garlic prawn & noodle salad.
The restaurant’s name references illustrious Botanist Gerard Fothergill who travelled the world researching plants, and whose last years of his life were spent running a small bookshop in the very building the restaurant now occupies. The Botanist pays homage to these historical and botanical themes of exploration and discovery, creating food and cocktail menus using abundant offerings of fresh produce, herbs and spices.
Last night Parched March, Sydney’s only month-long celebration of bar culture in support of Animal Welfare League NSW relaunched as BARS MARCHfor its fifth year! The new name says it all: a whole month of responsible drinking of fabulous cocktails in great bars – for a good cause. The launch was held at Café del Mar Sydney, with a huge event for over 300 guests, including top media, the bar industry, and pet pooches such as Fashion Dog and Oscar & Frank from the trendy optical brand. Celebrities who attended included Dr Katrina Warren, Miss World Australia Erin Holland, Wade Osborn and Cameron Laing from Amy Meredith, Tim Robards and girlfriend Anna Heinrich from The Bachelor Australia, Richard Wilkins from the Today show, and TV personality David Whitehill.
BARS MARCH partner Suntory provided a selection of amazing cocktails for guests, including the Russian Mule made with Russian Standard Original Vodka; the Side Car which consists of Remy Martin VSOP, Cointreau and lemon juice; and the Midori Fizz which mixes Russian Standard Vodka, Midori, soda and lime. Delicious Mediterranean-inspired canapés were provided by Café del Mar Head Chef Ben Fitton and Brand Ambassador Miguel Maestre such as Chermoula crusted chicken, rouille and endive, Watermelon, Persian fetta and jamon serrano, Rock oysters with lemon sandwiches, and Padron peppers, pink salt and cumin. A live art show by the incredibly talented Mambo artists kept guest entertained throughout the evening, along with a photo booth provided by JL Images.
BARS MARCH name has changed but all the favourite events are back, including Mr CBD, the Pets at the Pub series and special cocktails at bars all over Sydney, from major venue groups to funky little hotspots. More than 80 Sydney bars will be mixing up special cocktails throughout the month of March, and a bevy of celebrities, including the very cool Mambo artists, animal-loving garden guru Jamie Durie and media vet Dr Katrina Warren will be joining the fun.

In February last year, Sydney met its new favourite hidden bar. And behind a retro coke machine in Surry Hills, there she was, The Soda Factory. She’s been giving Sydneysiders in the know some darn good nights out for a whole year now. Happy Birthday darlin’.
As well as serving up their now-legendary gourmet Hotdogs, the team at The Soda Factory clearly also know how to turn out a good party once the lights go down – having hosted after-parties and surprise shows from the likes of Jason Mraz, Bloc Party, The Rubens, DJ Jazzy Jeff & Grandmaster Flash.
To mark an amazing first year, there will be a whole weekend of festivities on Friday and Saturday night, the 21st & 22nd Feb. It’ll be all the usual elements that make up an evening at The Soda Factory – delicious munchables served alongside killer cocktails & entertainment, but on this fabulous weekend there’s also a bit more in store.
The Soda Factory is proud to announce the return of DJ Grandmaster Flash – one of hip-hop’s first and most ground-breaking turntablists – jetting down all the way from New York City especially for Soda’s Saturday night party (Feb 22nd). “It was an amazing night when Grandmaster Flash performed with us last year, it’s rare for him to perform in such an intimate space, which meant that the atmosphere was electric – it seems only fitting to have him back for the 1st Birthday weekend” said bar owner Graham Cordery.
As they blow out the candles, The Soda Factory will also unveil a couple of additions to their successful formula….
Following the huge success of their hotdog menu, co-owner and Executive Chef Michael Chase will launch a full diner menu from Monday 17th February, 2014. The lit-up vintage American diner sign now hanging by the bar’s new diner section won’t let you forget it. Long tables have been fitted, accommodating larger groups to enjoy the expanded menu. With the full diner menu being available 5pm-10pm daily, & a late-night menu operating 10pm-late… Shall we talk food already?
You thought their dogs were dreamy, get a load of this menu folks… Cheeseburger Spring Rolls, Mac and Cheese Spring Rolls, Kick Ass Hot Buffalo Chicken Wings (with a blue cheese dipping sauce!), Texas BBQ Bite Size Pork Ribs… and we’re just talkin’ starters and share snacks. As you wipe the drool off your chin, try to listen to these mains… Pulled Pork Burger with Slaw, Fried Chicken & Waffles with Maple Syrup, Long Island Fish and Chips, The Big Luck Veggie Burger & Doctor Claw’s Lobster Roll. There’s a selection of salads and sides on offer, or for those with a sweet tooth – try a range of alcoholic thickshakes or Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches. Of course The Soda Factory’s famous dogs such as the Johnny Drama and Fats Domino are also here to stay!
Michael Chase commented “After the enormous popularity of our Gourmet Hotdogs, we wanted to truly bring an authentic taste of Americana to Surry Hills, with our take on the diner classics – along with some special Soda surprises like the Cheeseburger spring rolls & Popcorn Shrimp.”
To get a special taste test of some of these new dishes, pop down for Friday night’s party (Feb 21st) where bite-sized portions will be served up from 5-8pm, compliments of The Soda Factory, plus a free welcome drink on arrival from 5-7pm.
Graham Cordery summed up the year “We’ve been absolutely blown away by the success of The Soda Factory in the first year, and we’re looking forward expanding the concept this year and keep things interesting by launching our new full dinner menu and diner section of the bar. In true Soda Factory style there’ll also be some special guests dropping in over the next few months for intimate late-night performances – and you’ll never pay a cover charge”.
