Ahead of Crown Oaks Day – the Melbourne Cup Carnival’s ultimate day of style, the prestigious and time honoured tradition that is the VRC Oaks Club Luncheon returned to the Palladium at Crown today in spectacular fashion.
Hosted by Channel Seven’s Jennifer Keyte from 7 News and Mark Beretta from Sunrise, the event, now in its 23rd year, saw over 1500 fashionable guests don their finest racewear for an afternoon of world class glamour, entertainment and fine food.
Guests were spoilt with entertainment when American songstress Belinda Carlisle captivated the audience with renditions of her most loved hits including Heaven is a Place on Earth, Summer Rain, and Leave a Light On, which have made her one of the biggest solo female artists in the world. Carlisle, who is honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, dazzled the audience with a powerful and unforgettable show.
After a staggering 3.7 million viewers around the nation switched on to watch Dami Im win The X Factor just last week, the starlet lit up the VRC Oaks Club Luncheon stage with a passionate performance of her ARIA chart topping single Alive and a stunning performance of Purple Rain by Prince.
Supermodels Coco Rocha, VRC’s official Style Guest for the 2013 Melbourne Cup Carnival and Kate Upton, Emirates and VRC special guest for Emirates Melbourne Cup Day, attended the celebration in style and spoke about their experience at the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Guests also heard from Crown’s Culinary Directors and renowned chefs Neil Perry and Guillaume Brahimi, who discussed their culinary inspirations for the luncheon’s menu.

The third day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, Crown Oaks Day, is traditionally known as ‘ladies day’, and is an opportunity for women to express their own signature style. In the Myer Fashions on the Field Enclosure, the Women’s Racewear national champion is decided. On the track, the racing highlight is the Group 1 Crown Oaks, the A$1 million classic for three-year-old fillies over 2500m.

Sydney Social, VIP and celeb guests indulged in oysters, canapés and Piper-Heidsieck bubbles at The Bellevue in Paddington for the VIP Launch of the Piper-Heidsieck Spring Carnival Bar last night.
On a perfect balmy evening guests arrived early, and stayed late, at the beautifully-designed Piper-Heidsieck Spring Carnival Bar at the Bellevue Hotel in Paddington. The Piper bubbles were free flowing with Bellevue co-owners Ned Kelly and Paddy Coughlan set to order another pallet of Piper well ahead of schedule to re-stock the bar.
Located upstairs at the Bellevue the bar is decked with blooming spring flowers, fun murals and a turfed outdoor terrace embodying a fresh floral feel. Michelle Leslie, Ambassador for the Piper-Heidsieck Spring Carnival Bar welcomed familiar faces beautifully dressed in Steven Khalil (who designed her wedding dress). Guests ranged from actors to DJs, designers to presenters including Michael Caton, Alyssa McClelland, Kate Peck, Roy Billing, Justine Schofield, Martin and Michelle Walsh, Courtney Roulston, Alvin Quah, Penne Dennison, Sylvia Jeffreys, Georgia Sinclair, Mieke Buchan, Amber Renae just to name a few. Michelle shared her excitement at being the ambassador for the new Piper-Heidsieck Spring Carnival bar that is located in the upstairs space at the Bellevue that she personally styled and designed. Saying, “I’m really looking forward to spending more time here over the coming weeks, and to enjoying more Piper-Heidsieck bubbles. Marilyn Monroe once said that every night she went to bed with a drop of Chanel No.5 and woke up with a glass of Piper-Heidsieck so I think it’s my duty as a Piper ambassador to uphold her mantra.”
The French bubbles were a huge hit with guests, with the canapé menu matched and including freshly shucked oysters with eschalot vinegar, char grilled sirloin steak with mushroom sauce and fries and warm salad of grilled polenta with cumin roasted beetroot, Persian feta & salsa verde.

Curtis Stone was only too happy to pin the first 2013 Pin & Win lapel pin on Matt Preston as all proceeds from the sale of the pins this year will go to food rescue charity SecondBite.
The duo are now calling for several hundred volunteers to help sell Pin & Win lapel pins at the Melbourne Cup Carnival and Curtis said that he was proud to be helping to spread the message in his new role as a SecondBite Ambassador.
“SecondBite is aiming to raise $250,000 from the sale of the pins so they can collect and deliver an additional 625,000 hearty, nutritious meals to vulnerable Australians and their families who would otherwise go hungry.
“To do that they will need volunteers to be out in force on all of the main race days and both Matt and I hope that people will be keen to sign up as a volunteer and be part of this great campaign,” said Curtis.
Matt, who has been a long time supporter and Ambassador for SecondBite, said that it was easy to register and volunteers would enjoy being part of the Melbourne Cup Carnival while helping SecondBite.
“The money raised will enable SecondBite to provide fresh, nutritious food to the many community agencies supporting people in need across Australia,” said Matt.

Mumm Champagne Spring Carnival Bar at The BELLEVUE
Located upstairs at the Bellevue, the beautiful NV Mumm Champagne Spring Carnival Bar, styled by designer Michelle Leslie, was saturated with spring flowers, candles, painted murals, a freshly ‘turfed’ outdoor terrace and splashes of Mumm red and gold from the red carpet leading upstairs to lamp shades and Mumm imagery.
Set to be the place to be in Sydney during the spring racing carnival, the stylish ‘pop up’ bar will host Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Derby Day, as well as a special men’s dinner, a sumptuous Damien Pignolet dinner and the ultimate in Melbourne Cup day celebrations.
Bellevue Hotel co-owner and Riversdale Group CEO Paddy Coughlan welcomed guests, while ambassador for the NV Mumm Champagne Spring Carnival Bar Laura Csortan told VIP and celeb partygoers she was thrilled to be back from LA and in one of her favourite Sydney pubs for the launch of the bar, and DJ Alex Dimitriades spun cool tunes throughout the night.

A sumptuous three course luncheon for just $75pp has been designed by Head Chef David Magill and showcases the very best in seasonal produce and modern Italian flavour.

At The Old Library David’s spring inspired Melbourne Cup menu includes “Stuzzichini” (Appertizers) of snapper carpaccio, baby beetroots and blood orange and an amazing salad of marinated artichokes, broad beans, fennel, olive and purple potatoes.
There will be all the usual Melbourne Cup Day celebrations, including big screen broadcast of the races, a sweepstake and fashion parade that will help set the scene in the award winning stylish surrounds of the spectacular Old Library.
