Happy 2014 – Xmas at Byron Bay

Firstly Happy New Year!

What did you guys get up to for the festive and 2014 celebrations? I was so lucky and got to travel to Byron for Xmas for a week.

Here are my top picks if you’re heading to Byron:

The Pass Beach - Stunning views from the viewing deck, along with white sands and great waves. If you look hard enough you'll also see dolphins playing in the waves!

The Beach Cafe combines top notch open air dining with beach views so close you can almost touch the water. A great special venue if you’re wanting to spend a little bit more for that special occasion!

Mokha is the hidden gem on Lawson Street that is a great place to chill after a day at the beach with a red wine, great food and live artists that will take your breath away.

A staple venue to frequent at Byron is The Balcony Bar, watch the world go by as you enjoy ample tapas and cocktails.

For a cheaper night out, Woody’s is your venue! Great tunes, young crowd and alcohol flowing like there’s no tomorrow! Cheeky Monkey’s fits this bill too!

Finally, if you're looking for plush accommodation to stay at whilst in Byron, the Byron at Byron is 5 * luxury! The pool is stunning, the rooms are amazing, the food is unreal - if the hotel price tag is too much for your budget, why not check out the spa treatments... ahhmmaazzeeeee!

Sydney plays host to a new kind of Santa Claus this Christmas at Central

Sydney has welcomed a new socialite on the scene (this gal’s got competition)! Sporting skinny jeans and a red beanie, a vintage Citroën not a sleigh, and a love for soy lattes over milk & cookies any day; there’s a modern day Father Christmas in town to spread Christmas cheer.

Screen Shot 2013-12-20 at 3.35.37 PM

One for the big kids, Hipster Santa has taken up tenancy in Sydney’s new multi-level vertical ‘Living Mall’, Central at Central Park and will be running a number of hipster-esque activities in the lead up to Christmas including hula hooping, selfie hours and classic movie nights.

Come down to Central at Central Park this Sunday 22nd December between 12-5pm to learn the art of screen printing. Bobbin and Ink and Hipster Santa will hold this fun, interactive workshop where shoppers can make there own handmade Hipster Santa tea towel – a great addition to any hipster’s kitchen.

Opened in October this year, Central boasts a sun-drenched emporium, future-forward sustainable architecture, unique designs, free Wi-Fi, and extended trading hours.

Hipster Santa comments, “I am uber excited to be living in my new abode at Central, the sustainable design, vertical gardens and innovative Digital Wall makes it cooler then all of the other shopping centres around. It’s got an array of on-trend retailers, art spaces and a mix of cafés and restaurants, so it is perfect locale for Sydneysiders to head for Christmas shopping.”

With his own dedicated workshop on the Ground Floor, every week from now until Christmas Eve, an array of events and activities with this cool character will be taking place, from Roger Tait styling sessions to gift wrapping (Thursdays to Sundays 4pm – 6pm) to creating cool Crimbo decs with those that drop by.

Offering an ironic take on the traditional Santa photo, everyday between noon and 1pm, Hipster Santa will host a Santa Selfie Hour at his workshop for the cool kids. No sitting on Santa’s knee allowed (that’s just awkward), props, serious faces and filters are hipster approved. By hashtagging #hipstersanta on their photos snap-happy visitors have the chance to win a Glue Store Christmas prize pack.

And that’s not all! For those stuck for a gift, Hipster Santa is on hand to help pick the perfect pressie, from one of eclectic mix of young, contemporary retailers such as Pigeonhole, Capsule, Glue Store and Adidas. ‘Hipster Santa Approved’ eco tags feature on an array of items across Central which has been personally chosen by Hipster Santa as the perfect on-trend gift this Christmas.

And that’s not all! Shoppers can enjoy a new rendition of some classic Christmas carols with thanks to Hipster Santa and his band, The Real Deers who will be performing via the Digital Wall.

Local Sydneysiders should keep an eye on @hipster_santa for invitations to the ‘hipster hang nights’, latest updates, or just some pensive and wise words this festive season.

So whether it’s for a snap, a song or a spot of shopping or eating, Central at Central Park will be a mall with a difference to experience and enjoy this festive season.

Social 101** Matt Moran and Peter Sullivan go fishing

North Bondi Fish opens December 17
Bondi locals will have another reason to stay beachside when North Bondi Fish, the highly anticipated, casual restaurant and bar by Matt Moran and Peter Sullivan, opens on December 17.
Located a few short steps from the sand and surf in the old North Bondi Italian site, North Bondi Fish is Bondi at its best. The restaurant is a relaxed space, which personifies beachside chic and is the perfect spot for lunch, dinner and everything in between. The kitchen opens at midday and the full menu is available all day and late into the evening.
A nod to the waterfront location, North Bondi Fish interiors are playful and welcoming and take inspiration from the Mediterranean seaside, suiting the relaxed vibe perfectly. Think a mixture of communal, casual wooden benches and tables, light shades with pops of colour throughout the inside spilling onto the outdoor deck.
The North Bondi Fish menu features fresh, simple, seafood dishes using the best quality produce. The focus is on casual dining with light, fresh food. The menu offers a selection of small bites, summer salads and simple grilled fish dishes charcoal-grilled on the kitchen’s Inka Grill. Some of Matt’s favourites include yellowfin tuna ceviche; sweet potato scallops; prawn roll; grilled snapper with asparagus, pea shoots and avocado; and his own take on fish fingers. Of course, it wouldn’t be Bondi without a choice of several indulgent ice cream sundaes for a soothing end to a day in the surf.
The unique wine list, designed by Matt Dunne, features crisp aromatic whites and lighter reds, a mix of Australian and European wines with Champagne and prosecco among the 20 different wines served by the glass or carafe.
Lovers of a good G&T will be pleased to see their tipple is offered a variety of ways; Hendricks with fresh cucumber; Tanqueray Ten with fresh pink grapefruit; or Bombay Sapphire with fresh lime and orange. There are also a couple of North Bondi Fish specials such as a North Bondi Crush (Fresh watermelon and Campari served in a jar) and N-B-C (North Bondi Colada: Havana Club, passionfruit pulp, coconut syrup, fresh lime and pineapple juice) as well as the ultimate summer beachside drink, an Aperol Spritz (Aperol, soda, prosecco and fresh orange).
Well acquainted with the eastern suburbs, Matt Moran and Peter Sullivan began their restaurateur partnership 21 years ago at Paddington Inn Bistro and now own ARIA in Sydney and Brisbane and most recently opened CHISWICK in Woollahra in 2012.
Matt Moran says the duo is thrilled to be opening North Bondi Fish in this fantastic beachside location.
“North Bondi Fish is for the locals. It’s relaxed, it’s fun and it’s no fuss. It is the kind of place you head to for something good to eat anytime of the day, even while still in your thongs and boardies,” says Moran.

APEROL SPRITZ*

The Perfect Serve

Making Aperol Spritz is as easy as 3, 2, 1 – just get a tumbler or a large balloon glass and follow the simple instructions:

Add ice in the glass then pour in the Prosecco, the Aperol and add a splash of soda, top with a slice of orange. This serving avoids the Aperol settling at the bottom.

  • Ice
  • 3 parts of Cinzano Prosecco
  • 2 parts of Aperol
  • 1 splash of soda
  • A slice of orange
  • Also called “Spritz Veneziano” in an official cocktail of the IBA (International Bartending Association). IBA cocktails are prepared all over the world according to this original recipe.

Applejack Hospitality Launch ‘SoCal’ in Neutral Bay

Last night Applejack Hospitality, the boutique hospitality group behind Bondi Hardware and The Botanist, launched their third exciting venue ‘SoCal’ with a huge media and celebrity event; where over 180 guests were in attendance. Guests included top media and celebrities such as Lynette Bolton – WAG Nation star and wife of exe Sydney Swan’s player Jude, Luke Hines and Scotty Gooding from My Kitchen Rules, celebrity cook Justine Schofield, singer Sarah De Bono and Rugby League player Mitchell Pearce.

Zac Smart, James Privett, Hamish Watts, Ben Carroll

The balmy summers evening set the scene at the southern Californian inspired restaurant & bar. Guests travelled in style to the event thanks to event partner Uber, the hire car and taxi service company, arriving to DJs spinning laid back beach beats and Del-Martini cocktails, consisting of Ketel One Vodka with Peach Liqueur, fresh lime, peach puree, and a dash of peach bitters.

Beer, wine & sparkling kept guests thirst quenched throughout the evening, and to finish was Tommy’s Margarita – El Jimador Reposado with fresh lime and Agave nectar. Newly appointed Head Chef Zac Smart (formerly from Steele Bar & Grill) has created a menu with a Mexican, North American and seafood emphasis, including Cali-inspired shareplates, taco’s, mini dogs & ceviches.

Guests enjoyed tasters of a selection of these dishes during the event, such as Hawaiian tuna poke on corn tostada, Crab and sopressada empanadas, Refried bean and rice quesadilla, SoCal chilli dogs, Pollo Loco Pinchos – spiced chicken skewers on rice with sauce Mole, and Churros and chocolate sauce for dessert.

Renowned designers Luchetti Krelle (of Momofuku Seiobo, Ananas, Hinky Dinks and Sake fame) have truly evoked the laid back, southern Californian sandy vibe and feel at SoCal. The venue has a strong retro chic ambience with bright tonal colours along with unique furniture and design features. The design has taken full advantage of the generous outdoor terrace which has a real San Diago beach bar feel, and there is also a relaxed bar area for a cheeky drink or two, which works in well with the venues 2am License!

Applejack Hospitality has proven its ability to create consistently popular, fun and successful venues with The Botanist and Bondi Hardware, and their new venture SoCal is set to follow the same winning formula.
