Last week Sydney Social 101 was invited to preview Merivale’s ‘Around the World with Eighty Whites’ – which took guests on a global expedition of white wine discovery at ivy’s The Den on Wednesday night.
Merivale’s Master Sommelier, Franck Moreau, personally selected eighty white and sparkling wines from countries as far and wide as Chile, Austria, France, Greece, Romania and Japan!
Merivale’s sommeliers as well as a host of leading wine importers wore on hand to guide the guests around some of the finest and most unique grapes from around the world.
Executive Chef, Richard Purdue, designed a delicious canapé selection to compliment the range of wines including pea, mint and ricotta arancini, sofa taco with salmon ceviche, chill chicken sliders and of course, an almighty cheese table.
It was a great night and the wine was out of this world! Once again Merivale never fails to deliver!

As you know I get to attend some amazing events through Sydney Social 101, but you might not know that I also work in PR by day! Last night was my turn to work on the event behind the scenes for one of my lovely clients. Pommery Champagne provided the sparkle for the evening as the crowd of Sydney VIPs enjoyed a selection of delicious pearl and diamond inspired canapés which included: Lamb Loin & Eggplant Mash with Pomegranate, Apple & Pear Kimchi and mouth watering Chicken Dumplings. Continuing the opulent theme of the evening, the canapés culminated in an exotic desert that consisted of pomegranate panacotta topped with passion fruit and gold flakes.
The evening climaxed as eight gorgeous models, showcasing the new Essence ULTÎME andBlonde ULTÎME range, took centre stage within a Vanity Fair-style vignette. Each girl styled by Lores, illustrated with poise and elegance the stunning collection of colours and care products developed by Schwarzkopf and the iconic Claudia Schiffer.
The Faders provided the soundtrack to the evening with an exclusive set setting the tone for an playful evening.
To mark the conclusion of the show-stopping event, each guest departed with exclusive ULTIME product and a jewelry box, one of which containing a $3,000 diamond provided by Max Diamonds.

On Tuesday night Kirribilli’s first small bar and restaurant The Botanist, which is owned by Applejack Hospitality, who is behind successful Sydney restaurants Bondi Hardware and recently opened SoCal Neutral Bay, held a huge birthday party to celebrate turning one year old. Over 200 locals, friends, media and celebrities attended, including Teri Haddy, Demi Harman, Tim Blackwell, Tara Rushton, Nacho Pop, and Scott Gooding, and the event was a lively night of celebration which continued late into the evening! Sydney Social 101 was there to provide a sneak peek into the VIP party!
Upon arrival guests were treated to a choice of two cocktails, the Barrington Boutique – made with Ketel One, lime juice, raspberry jam sugar syrup, cranberry juice and a dash rhubarb bitters, and Fothergill Punch – consisting of Pampero Especial, lime juice, orgeat, pineapple juice and a dash of cherry bitters. Charles De Fere French sparkling, wines by Geoff Merrill and Vale Ale & Vale IPA were also served. James Privett, Applejack Group Executive Chef, served guests delicious tasters from the new autumn menu such as the ever popular classic beef sliders, white fish ceviche lettuce cups, broccoli & blue cheese arancini, lamb & harissa sausage rolls and garlic prawn & noodle salad.
The restaurant’s name references illustrious Botanist Gerard Fothergill who travelled the world researching plants, and whose last years of his life were spent running a small bookshop in the very building the restaurant now occupies. The Botanist pays homage to these historical and botanical themes of exploration and discovery, creating food and cocktail menus using abundant offerings of fresh produce, herbs and spices.

It’s the first day back at work after the Australia Day weekend and to say I’m feeling a little fragile is putting it mildly. I may have over indulged – but then again, it would be un-Australian of me to not get in the spirit of things, right?
Well now I’ve decided to take a stand and to start to work towards the new me – I’m 29, not getting any younger, this is the last year of my twenties and I figure I should do what I can to look after my body (we only get one of them)!
Don’t get me wrong, with the array of wonderful events I get to attend, with the free bars and stunning food, it can be very easy to ‘have a night off’. Ultimately however, I have come to the conclusion that I should live by the moto ‘everything in moderation’, a quick fix diet isn’t ever going to work for me – neither is banning alcohol or amazing food from my life. All that I achieve by doing this is being miserable and gorging when the ‘fix’ is over (and probably undo all m hard work within two-hours).
As you may have heard, I am taking part in body+soul revolution! The body+soul revolution is a 10-week health and fitness online program scientifically proven to help users achieve a balanced, healthy lifestyle – all with the help of our team of trusted body+soul experts (from nutritionists to sexologists!). I believe that this is the best way for me to start as I mean to go on, a lifestyle choice rather than a fad diet.
I’ve also decided to put myself out there and will be documenting my progress throughout the 10-week revolution (so that I have nowhere to hide and so that I actually have to face this head on!).
Having scoured the healthy prepared meal delivery services across Sydney, these two have consistently come out on top – in terms of taste and affordability.
In additional to the body+soul revolution, I will be following a 14 Day 1,200 Calorie Kick Start Plan from Dietlicious (prior to the body+soul revolution commencing).
I will also be working with Hello Fresh during the body+soul revolution to provide you with information on meal plans, how tasty and affordable they can be along with insights as to how long they take to prepare. (For time poor, health conscious readers!)
Throughout the process I will be working out with my own personal trainer (plus swimming four times a week) – you have permission to shout at me if I slack off!
I will be monitoring my progress on body+soul revolution’s website throughout the ten weeks. There is a wealth of information as part of the body+soul revolution, you can find out more at bodyandsoul.com.au/revolution
Now I will update you all with my progress week to week and will also post daily updates via my social media channels to see how I’m tracking. In the interest of being 100% transparent, I will update you with my weight and inch loss (fingers crossed!) as I progress.
Here are my current stats (inches will be added soon):
Height: 5’7” (170cm)
Weight: 72 KG
Dress size: 12
At the end of the 10 week body+soul revolution, with the help of Hello Fresh, Dietlicious and my PT I would love to achieve the following:
Height: 5’7” (170cm) – Shockingly the same 😉
Weight: 62 KG
Dress size: 10
I would absolutely love some support throughout this progress, maybe you might be interested in even taking part with me? To be involved it’s really simple,
Simply log onto bodyandsoul.com.au/revolution for a free health and weight assessment, choose a program to suit your lifestyle and goals, and let the fab team of body+soul experts guide you through a 10-week program of delicious meal plans and recipes, easy-to-follow workouts and all the tips and tricks you’ll need to lose weight, feel great and boost your energy.
The body+soul revolution begins Sunday 2nd February 2014 at bodyandsoul.com.au/revolution. I have already begun with the pre-revolution detox to best prepare myself for the experience, you know what, I’m really excited about this!

MERIVALE CHEFS WERE ‘BORN TO COOK’
March into Merivale, Sydney’s signature Food and Wine Festival, and one of Sydney Social 101’s favourite food festivals, returns for its sixth sensational year from Wednesday 12 February to Friday 11 April. Inspired by the first and favourite food memories of Merivale’s talented chefs, the eight week culinary feast will feature over 60 mouth-watering events across an unrivalled range of restaurants, bars and pubs, from the hatted est. and Mr. Wong to local hangouts Papi Chulo and The Fish Shop. Tickets are on sale Wednesday 22 January from http://www.merivale.com.au
This year’s March into Merivale theme, ‘Born to Cook’, draws on the chefs’ first, favourite and funniest food experiences, inviting diners on a delicious trip down memory lane. Their memories are as diverse as the chefs themselves and reveal the variety of influences and talent that lead Merivale’s award-winning kitchens. Dan Hong, for example, owes his cooking prowess to the early influence of his mother Angie who would often spread newspaper and sit on the kitchen floor, cutting up whole chickens with a cleaver. For Palings’ Christopher Whitehead, it was the ‘Australian Women’s Weekly Cookbook’ that first inspired his love of food and he remembers smuggling a torch into bed to pore over the pages of recipes. Felix’s Nathan Johnson recalls the English Summer and the unmistakable sound of the local ice cream van while fellow Brit Jeremy Strode reminisces about his daily childhood job of collecting milk straight from the source. Papi Chulo’s formidable duo, Patrick Friesen and Christopher Hogarth, might be joined at the hip now but their childhood food memories couldn’t be further apart – Tasmanian raised Chris loved to fish with his brothers and throw the catch straight on the BBQ while Canadian born Patrick had an unusual taste for butter, eating chunks straight from the fridge and earning the nickname Phat Pat as a result.
March into Merivale will officially kick off on Wednesday 12 February with the annual Launch Party at ivy. Showcasing the best food and drinks from over twenty Merivale venues, the Launch Party will see more than 3,000 food lovers take over Paling’s Kitchen & Bar, The Den and Terrace, Ivy Ballroom and Ash Street. Guests will be able to meet their favourite chefs, bartenders and sommeliers as they’re served up signature dishes, cocktails and wines, all while enjoying the roving entertainment. The event ticket, priced at $35, comes with eight tokens to redeem at the various stalls, with top-ups available on the night.
Turning kitchens and bars into culinary playgrounds, Merivale has created over sixty amazing events to tantalise the tastebuds. ‘Around the World with Eighty Whites’ will take guests on a global expedition of white wine discovery, curated by Merivale’s Master Sommelier, Franck Moreau, on Wednesday 5 March. Dessert lovers can keep their sweet tooth sugary with ‘Just Desserts presented by Foxtel’s LifeStyle FOOD’, a dessert extravaganza at Establishment on Monday 10 March. Manly’s hotly-tipped Papi Chulo crosses the bridge for the ultimate urban barbeque party ‘Where There’s Smoke’ at ivy on Wednesday 19 March before Ash Street is again transformed into a twilight street fair for ‘European Laneway’ on Wednesday 9 April. est. is ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’ with an elegant high tea, Uccello embraces Frank Sinatra with a special ‘mafioso’ dinner and London’s Brick Lane comes to Bistrode CBD for a one-off Indian feast.
Cocktail devotees can be taught how to shake and stir by Merivale’s Group Bars Manager, Paul Mant, with ‘Mixology 101’ at Palmer & Co throughout March. Beer enthusiasts can indulge their love for a ‘cold one’ at ‘Beer at Beresford’ on Saturday 8 March and those with a penchant for Pinot can taste eight international Pinots in a master class at ivy Bottle Shop on Tuesday 8 April.
It wouldn’t be March into Merivale without the incredibly affordable $33 meal deals. Available for lunch or dinner, Monday to Friday, a meal and a glass of wine or beer can be enjoyed at all eleven Merivale restaurants throughout the festival. Merivale pubs have their own take on the $33 deal, offering two meals and two drinks for only $33. The menus will change frequently, leaving no excuse not to try them all.
Justin Hemmes, Merivale CEO, said: “Now in its sixth year, March into Merivale continues to grow bigger, better and more delicious than ever. This year, our talented chefs have taken a step back in time with the memories that first ignited their passion for cooking. Along with our wonderful sommeliers and bartenders, they have created over 60 amazing events that prove exactly why they were born to cook”.
