Ahead of Crown Oaks Day – the Melbourne Cup Carnival’s ultimate day of style, the prestigious and time honoured tradition that is the VRC Oaks Club Luncheon returned to the Palladium at Crown today in spectacular fashion.
Hosted by Channel Seven’s Jennifer Keyte from 7 News and Mark Beretta from Sunrise, the event, now in its 23rd year, saw over 1500 fashionable guests don their finest racewear for an afternoon of world class glamour, entertainment and fine food.
Guests were spoilt with entertainment when American songstress Belinda Carlisle captivated the audience with renditions of her most loved hits including Heaven is a Place on Earth, Summer Rain, and Leave a Light On, which have made her one of the biggest solo female artists in the world. Carlisle, who is honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, dazzled the audience with a powerful and unforgettable show.
After a staggering 3.7 million viewers around the nation switched on to watch Dami Im win The X Factor just last week, the starlet lit up the VRC Oaks Club Luncheon stage with a passionate performance of her ARIA chart topping single Alive and a stunning performance of Purple Rain by Prince.
Supermodels Coco Rocha, VRC’s official Style Guest for the 2013 Melbourne Cup Carnival and Kate Upton, Emirates and VRC special guest for Emirates Melbourne Cup Day, attended the celebration in style and spoke about their experience at the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Guests also heard from Crown’s Culinary Directors and renowned chefs Neil Perry and Guillaume Brahimi, who discussed their culinary inspirations for the luncheon’s menu.
Other special guests included Melbourne Cup winning trainer Gai Waterhouse, VRC Vice Chairman Amanda Elliott, Lady Susan Renouf, Crown General Manager of Public Relations Ann Peacock, Myer Fashions on the Field Ambassador Rebecca Bramich, UK Myer designer Jeff Banks, Scherri-Lee Biggs, Barbara Licuria, Danielle Spencer, Alex Davis, Erin Maxwell and Simone Callaghan.
MC Jennifer Keyte said she was delighted to host the VRC Oaks Club Luncheon at the Palladium at Crown, with the event setting the tone for tomorrow’s raceday at Flemington.
“This year’s pink on pink theming in the Palladium at Crown was truly spectacular, and was complimented by an incredible sea of hats and fascinators and amazing fashion. With so many fabulous guests dressed in their finest racewear, the luncheon, which sold out in minutes, was a spectacular success and a great preview of what’s to come at tomorrow’s Crown Oaks Day” said Keyte.
Hardy Brothers Jewellers, the makers of the 18 carat gold Melbourne Cup, created a one-of-a-kind Emirates Melbourne Cup lapel pin, which fetched an auction price of $7,000 for the charity SecondBite.
The third day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, Crown Oaks Day, is traditionally known as ‘ladies day’, and is an opportunity for women to express their own signature style. In the Myer Fashions on the Field Enclosure, the Women’s Racewear national champion is decided. On the track, the racing highlight is the Group 1 Crown Oaks, the A$1 million classic for three-year-old fillies over 2500m.

Last night was the opening night of the newest (and coolest) rooftop bar in Sydney. Sky Terrace Bar in Star City is sure to be everyones favourite hideout this Summer.
Amazing views of the city skyline, pop up food stations, live music, cocktails and if that wasn’t enough to tempt you there is a table tennis table and badminton court for those of you who enjoy a casual hit around with your mojito.
Feast on an impressive food menu including Pulled Pork Sandwiches, Dubai Falafel AND Movenpick ice cream, all items are generously priced at $5.
If you are heading down on a Saturday night you will also have the best seat in the house for the weekly fireworks display at Darling Harbour. What is not to love about this place?
The Sky Terrace is open most Friday and Saturday nights between now and January 9th and then it will be open every night. Keep an eye on their website as it is closed on a couple of Friday nights due to private events.
The weather is warming up and The Cottage Bar & Kitchen in Balmain has launched its new spring menu just in time – it’s perfect for sharing with friends and family on long, hot, sunny days. Designed by head chef Ellen Young, dishes include baby corn with lime oil, parmesan and micro coriander; arancini with lemon, mint, pea & haloumi; snow pea salad with red onion and cabbage, carrot, and orange oil; seared scallops with rocket, fresh fruit vinaigrette and prosciutto; and pork ribs with guava BBQ sauce and jicama salad. The menu also boasts an extensive selection of the finest cheeses from the UK, France, Spain and Italy.
The restaurant is a wine bar that feels like grandma’s farmhouse, with a mismatch of kitsch and vintage furniture and a newly opened courtyard for alfresco dining. The menu is inspired by ‘share-style’ food and pizza’s cooked in the huge pizza oven – one of the centre pieces of the venue – and an extensive wine list is comprehensive yet approachable with some quirky twists, along with top notch cocktails and craft beers on offer.
Working with renowned designers Luchetti Krelle (of Momofuku Seiobo, Hinky Dinks and Sake fame) the owners put together the concept for the venue, creating a warm and friendly space which complements Balmain’s rustic heritage. The Cottage Bar & Kitchen is a charming venue which food and wine lovers will relish, and locals will want to make their regular hangout.
The Bucket List, chef Tom Walton and Fishtales are throwing on a Seafood Festival to highlight local seafood purveyors. As part of Good Food Month, it is a chance for locals to taste and eat their way through mini stalls whilst talking with the purveyors. Pepe Saya butter and Brasserie Bread will be served to complement all the seafood dishes to complete the experience.
“This festival is an exciting opportunity to showcase some of our producers in the local seafood industry. There’s nothing better than a weekend of great food, sharing a few of my favourite seafood preparation methods and dishes in the Masterclass so that people can walk away with new inspiration to add to their repertoire,” says Chef Tom Walton.
A family friendly festival, food aficionados and aspiring mini masterchefs will equally get their fix with Tom hosting two Masterclasses a day over the festive weekend. Choose to learn how to cure and smoke seafood or how to create delicious seafood salads, just in time for summer. If that’s not enough, the Godfather of hand churned butter, Pepe Saya will be joining the class and showcasing the secrets behind his famous hand churned butter.
