The weather is warming up and The Cottage Bar & Kitchen in Balmain has launched its new spring menu just in time – it’s perfect for sharing with friends and family on long, hot, sunny days. Designed by head chef Ellen Young, dishes include baby corn with lime oil, parmesan and micro coriander; arancini with lemon, mint, pea & haloumi; snow pea salad with red onion and cabbage, carrot, and orange oil; seared scallops with rocket, fresh fruit vinaigrette and prosciutto; and pork ribs with guava BBQ sauce and jicama salad. The menu also boasts an extensive selection of the finest cheeses from the UK, France, Spain and Italy.
The restaurant is a wine bar that feels like grandma’s farmhouse, with a mismatch of kitsch and vintage furniture and a newly opened courtyard for alfresco dining. The menu is inspired by ‘share-style’ food and pizza’s cooked in the huge pizza oven – one of the centre pieces of the venue – and an extensive wine list is comprehensive yet approachable with some quirky twists, along with top notch cocktails and craft beers on offer.
Working with renowned designers Luchetti Krelle (of Momofuku Seiobo, Hinky Dinks and Sake fame) the owners put together the concept for the venue, creating a warm and friendly space which complements Balmain’s rustic heritage. The Cottage Bar & Kitchen is a charming venue which food and wine lovers will relish, and locals will want to make their regular hangout.
The Bucket List, chef Tom Walton and Fishtales are throwing on a Seafood Festival to highlight local seafood purveyors. As part of Good Food Month, it is a chance for locals to taste and eat their way through mini stalls whilst talking with the purveyors. Pepe Saya butter and Brasserie Bread will be served to complement all the seafood dishes to complete the experience.
“This festival is an exciting opportunity to showcase some of our producers in the local seafood industry. There’s nothing better than a weekend of great food, sharing a few of my favourite seafood preparation methods and dishes in the Masterclass so that people can walk away with new inspiration to add to their repertoire,” says Chef Tom Walton.
A family friendly festival, food aficionados and aspiring mini masterchefs will equally get their fix with Tom hosting two Masterclasses a day over the festive weekend. Choose to learn how to cure and smoke seafood or how to create delicious seafood salads, just in time for summer. If that’s not enough, the Godfather of hand churned butter, Pepe Saya will be joining the class and showcasing the secrets behind his famous hand churned butter.

Hosted by Michelle Leslie at the Bellevue Paddington
Sydney Social, VIP and celeb guests indulged in oysters, canapés and Piper-Heidsieck bubbles at The Bellevue in Paddington for the VIP Launch of the Piper-Heidsieck Spring Carnival Bar last night.
On a perfect balmy evening guests arrived early, and stayed late, at the beautifully-designed Piper-Heidsieck Spring Carnival Bar at the Bellevue Hotel in Paddington. The Piper bubbles were free flowing with Bellevue co-owners Ned Kelly and Paddy Coughlan set to order another pallet of Piper well ahead of schedule to re-stock the bar.
Located upstairs at the Bellevue the bar is decked with blooming spring flowers, fun murals and a turfed outdoor terrace embodying a fresh floral feel. Michelle Leslie, Ambassador for the Piper-Heidsieck Spring Carnival Bar welcomed familiar faces beautifully dressed in Steven Khalil (who designed her wedding dress). Guests ranged from actors to DJs, designers to presenters including Michael Caton, Alyssa McClelland, Kate Peck, Roy Billing, Justine Schofield, Martin and Michelle Walsh, Courtney Roulston, Alvin Quah, Penne Dennison, Sylvia Jeffreys, Georgia Sinclair, Mieke Buchan, Amber Renae just to name a few. Michelle shared her excitement at being the ambassador for the new Piper-Heidsieck Spring Carnival bar that is located in the upstairs space at the Bellevue that she personally styled and designed. Saying, “I’m really looking forward to spending more time here over the coming weeks, and to enjoying more Piper-Heidsieck bubbles. Marilyn Monroe once said that every night she went to bed with a drop of Chanel No.5 and woke up with a glass of Piper-Heidsieck so I think it’s my duty as a Piper ambassador to uphold her mantra.”
The French bubbles were a huge hit with guests, with the canapé menu matched and including freshly shucked oysters with eschalot vinegar, char grilled sirloin steak with mushroom sauce and fries and warm salad of grilled polenta with cumin roasted beetroot, Persian feta & salsa verde.
Filled to capacity the gorgeous crowd bought all the fun and glamour of the spring carnival to the bar, creating an amazing vibe. Set to continue as a spring carnival racing season hot spot, the Piper-Heidsieck Spring Carnival Bar will host a ‘Ladies Luncheon’, Saturday October 26 (limited spots still available) with Melbourne Cup day celebrations a sell out within days of going on-sale.

There are few films that have you hooked in from the first five seconds of the trailer alone! This my friends is one of those few!
It seems that audiences worldwide are in agreement as Alfonso Cuarón’s dramatic thriller, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney cleans up at the box office.
Only five days after its record-breaking launch, Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Gravity” has flown past $100 million at the worldwide box office. The film has earned an estimated $68.5 million domestically and $35.8 internationally for a global total to date of $104.3 million. The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of Internationa l Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
Following weeks of enthusiastic critical acclaim and huge anticipation from moviegoers, the Alfonso Cuarón-directed dramatic thriller exceeded all expectations on its opening weekend. Taking in $55.8 million domestically, “Gravity” broke a number of box office records, including those for the biggest October opening for any film, the largest IMAX opening in October ($11.8 million), and the highest opening weekend ever for stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.
In making the announcement, Fellman stated, “We are all thrilled by this start—from the tremendous critical acclaim to the fantastic response from audiences. Alfonso Cuarón and his brilliant collaborators crafted a groundbreaking film that succeeds on every level, both creatively and commercially. Word of mouth has been amazing and we expect it only to grow, keeping ‘Gravity’ strong at the box office in the weeks and months ahead.”
Kwan Vandenberg noted, “‘Gravity’ is a riveting and relatable human drama that has struck a chord with moviegoers in countries around the globe. We are excited by these numbers and know this is just the beginning, with much-anticipated openings coming up in major markets such as the UK, France, Japan, Korea, Brazil and Mexico.”
Sue Kroll, Warner Bros. Pictures President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, said, “The buzz on ‘Gravity’ began building when we unveiled the film at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. Critical raves and screening audience reactions reinforced what we already knew—that the combination of thrilling drama, breathtaking visuals, and powerfulperformancesmadethisafilmthathadtobeexperiencedonthebigscreen.” President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production Greg Silverman added, “Sue and I join everyone at Warner Bros. in congratulating Alfonso Cuarón, producer David Heyman, screenwriter Jonás Cuarón, Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, and all the other talented artists who worked to make ‘Gravity’ an unequivocal cinematic achievement.”
Academy Award® winners Sandra Bullock (“The Blind Side”) and George Clooney (“Syriana”) star in “Gravity,” a heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space. The film was directed by Oscar® nominee Alfonso Cuarón (“Children of Men”).
Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (Clooney) in command. But on a seemingly routine mission, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalski completely alone— tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left.
But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.
“Gravity” was written by Alfonso Cuarón & Jonás Cuarón, and produced by Alfonso Cuarón and David Heyman (the “Harry Potter” films). Chris deFaria, Nikki Penny and Stephen Jones served as executive producers.
The behind-the-scenes team includes multiple Oscar®-nominated director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki (“Children of Men,” “The New World”); production designer Andy Nicholson (art director “Alice in Wonderland”); editors Alfonso Cuarón and Mark Sanger (VFX editor “Children of Men”); and costume designer Jany Temime (the “Harry Potter” films). The visual effects were handled by Oscar®-nominated visual effects supervisor Tim Webber (“The Dark Knight”). The music was composed by Steven Price (“Attack the Block”).
Warner Bros. Pictures Presents an Esperanto Filmoj/Heyday Films Production, an Alfonso Cuarón Film, “Gravity.” The film is being released in 3D and 2D and IMAX®, and is distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company.
