Last night Opera Bar hosted drinks for the launch of Sydney’s Backyard at Opera Bar.
To celebrate the annual ‘Summer at the House’ festivities, Opera Bar has been transformed into Sydney’s Backyard, green turf, an iconic Hills Hoist, picnic tables and authentic veggie patch are all in place and offer a backyard experience right on Sydney Harbour. Sydney’s Backyard is in action from Fri 3 Jan to Fri 31 Jan.
Despite the grey skies, Sydney summer was in full swing last night…guests enjoyed tasty BBQ bites; grilled corn on the cob and barbequed prawns and sipped on Frostie Fruit Slushies and Spiked Homemade Lemonade all made with Australian Tasmanian 666 Vodka and Perth based Gin West Winds.
The venue takes on a true backyard look and feel with green turf laid, an iconic Hills Hoist, picnic tables and an authentic veggie patch. What did you guys get up to for the festive and 2014 celebrations? I was so lucky and got to travel to Byron for Xmas for a week.
Here are my top picks if you’re heading to Byron:
The Beach Cafe combines top notch open air dining with beach views so close you can almost touch the water. A great special venue if you’re wanting to spend a little bit more for that special occasion!
Mokha is the hidden gem on Lawson Street that is a great place to chill after a day at the beach with a red wine, great food and live artists that will take your breath away.
A staple venue to frequent at Byron is The Balcony Bar, watch the world go by as you enjoy ample tapas and cocktails.
Here at Sydney Social 101, we’re always on the look out for new exciting venues to explore!
There are going to be MANY posts on here about bars, venues, festivals, activities, beaches, restaurants, clubs, movies, fashion, beauty and SO much more.
We look forward to sharing them with you!

In the past 9 years SPICE Afloat has welcomed over 7000 partygoers to dance their way in to the 1st day of the New Year. Past guests include H.O.S.H., Joris Voorn, Tiger & Woods, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Bjorn Wilke, Milton Jackson, Slam, Ripperton, Mattias Meyer, Ant J Steep, Radio Slave, Simon Baker & Deepchild.
With first release of public tickets on sale from this Monday 16th September, you will have to keep your finger on the pulse to secure your spot on the party vessel!
SPICE Afloat is a special event held as part of Sydney’s famous New Year celebrations organised by the Reckless Republic duo Murat Kilic & Warren Faulkner, who are behind the successful Sydney venue “The Spice Cellar”. Based on the success of Sydney’s clubbing institution SPICE, Spice Afloat was born 9 years ago. Since then, with the opening of successful Sydney club The Spice Cellar in 2011, the SPICE team has proven their standing as leaders in the Australian electronic music scene by supporting local and international underground talent.
The boat, the party, the people, the music and the atmosphere all adds up to create the ultimate wonderland on water. The only sunrise cruise in the country and being the reckless little freak that you are, you just can’t drag your buzzing little self home just yet. It’s not just you that feels this tumultuous rejuvenation…it’s the whole SPICE revolution!
The spicy little underbelly of Sydney’s underground shakes to its feet and stands up to be counted! Lingering in the peripheries we emerge wholehearted and full fisted from the darkest alleyways of the city and stand up to be counted after 4am… We will raise our hands to the first sunrise of the year triumphantly as we float about tranquilly on the hottest damn harbour the world has ever seen.
Audiojack are the Leeds based DJs, producers and label owners making big waves in recent years with original productions and remixes for labels such as 20:20 Vision, Leftroom, Get Physical, BPitch Control, OFF, Exploited, Diynamic and their own rapidly expanding Gruuv imprint.
Whilst it was their robotic techno sound that filled the dance floors in their early years, it is their current deeper and housier style which has reaffirmed their ability to produce groovy underground music across the genres whilst maintaining their own strong signature sound. Now an integral part of the electronic music scene, Audiojack are equally captivating DJs. Their tightly woven, deep digging sets have seen them booked to play everywhere from Space (Ibiza) to fabric (London), Watergate (Berlin) to Zouk (Singapore), D-Edge (Sao Paulo) to SPICE Afloat (Sydney).
As we look to the future, appetite whetting highlights include vocal collaborations with Stee Downes and Nancy Wang (LCD Soundsystem), the long awaited release of their hugely supported Plastic Dreams remake, new original EPs on 2020Vision and Gruuv and their much anticipated live show, sure to be as individual and forward thinking as everything else this twosome set their mind to.
Lovebirds (Winding Road/Buzzin Fly/Teardrop – DE)
Lovebirds is the solo project of Hamburg resident Sebastian ‘Basti’ Doering. Following 3 excellent singles on the much-respected Winding Road Records label, Lovebirds is big news right now. Labels such as Freerange and Buzzin Fly are hot on his heels, eager to sign his tracks.
The Lovebirds sound is like a blast from the past with house steroids packing serious production muscle. Listening to Lovebirds is like taking trip back to the 70s and 80s – but riding in a gleaming futuristic spaceship. The cream of the dance world has its eyes on Lovebirds. Tom Middleton is a big fan. Jimpster has signed up some tracks for a first EP on Freerange. Ben Watt is in regular contact and has signed a track for one of his recent compilations. Basti is involved in fruitful collaborations with Holly Backler, Vincenzo, and other artists. As if all this wasn’t enough, Basti is gathering a collection of songs for release on his and Vincenzo’s new label Teardrop Records, which is destined to become an essential new addition to the house library.

Paradise NYE is an exciting addition to the Sydney events calendar, a party designed to showcase the best of a Sydney NYE; unbeatable views of Sydney Harbour, great food created by celebrity chefs, fireworks so close you feel like you could touch them and the evening’s soundtrack delivered by a line- up of internationally acclaimed DJs.
This December 31st, Paradise NYE will see the Overseas Passenger Terminal, arguably the best location on Sydney Harbour to witness the stunning annual fireworks display, transform into a Paradise wonderland to welcome in 2014 in style. Palettes will be pleased by bespoke canapés crafted by renowned chefs Pete Evans, Adam D’Sylva and Justin North, while the sounds of internationally respected DJs Norman Jay MBE, Aeroplane and Russ Dewbury create a flawless sonic backdrop to welcome in the New Year.
Paradise is a perfectly orchestrated culture clash of fine food and music, eliminating the fuss from NYE while providing an unrivaled New Year experience. Taking place in the upper balcony of Customs Hall, the Paradise event will offer direct views of the Harbour Bridge from its adjoining car park and balcony areas, designed especially for the event. Russ Dewbury, the man behind the historical Brighton Jazz Rooms, will open proceedings with his signature mix of jazz, tropical beats and vintage flavours that will trickle out to all areas. As the clock nears midnight and the party is truly underway, Italian-Belgian producer Vito De Luca aka Aeroplane will take to the decks for the second audible course, spinning his 1980s-inspired French House beats to perfectly frame the peak of celebrations.
Legendary DJ and UK dance-scene pioneer Norman Jay MBE will take Paradise NYE to the early hours of January 1st with his Funk, Soul and Disco DJ set, the kind that will positively make you want to dress- up-to-get-down. In 2002, Norman Jay MBE was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire, the highest civilian honour, awarded on merit of “deejaying and services to music”. His multifaceted career spanning over 30 years – and still going strong – has seen Norman Jay play on stages across the world, performing at early incarnations of the Brooklyn ‘Block Party’, starting London’s Kiss FM, through to his current go-to-DJ status for an array of personalities including Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, David & Victoria Beckham, Vivienne Westwood, Thierry Henry and President Obama.
Six courses of finely curated dishes will be served, cocktail style, throughout the course of the evening and come courtesy of some of Australia’s finest chef talents. Since the age of 19, internationally renowned chef and restaurateur Pete Evans (My Kitchen Rules & SumoSalad) has opened six award- winning restaurants across Australia, including ‘The Pantry’, ‘Hugo’s Manly’ and most recently ‘Little Hunter’ in Melbourne’s CBD. Currently at helm of the widely successful international television series My Kitchen Rules, Pete Evans has a penchant for fresh, healthy, organic produce that is paralleled only by his love of educating people about nutritional food and wellness.
It’s no accident that Adam D’Sylva has become one of the most talked about chefs in town. As part owner and head chef of CODA & Tonka, two of Melbourne’s hottest bar / restaurants, Adam has built himself an enviable culinary reputation. Awarded a chef’s hat in the AGFG 2010 and 2011, and owner of a restaurant named after a Led Zeppelin album, Adam is the embodiment of the music vs. food Paradise concept.
Justin North rounds up the trio of chefs adding their deft touch to the most anticipated evening of the year. As a regular on Masterchef, author of two award-winning books, GQ Chef of the Year in 2010, and with his previous restaurant, Bécasse, the proud owner of two coveted Chef’s Hats from 2003 – 2011, Justin is perfectly placed to round off proceedings.
There are two all-inclusive packages available for Paradise NYE.
The exclusive VIP balcony, nestled away from the main Customs Hall on the upstairs balcony, will provide an intimate Paradise experience, offering unsurpassed views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and fireworks, with access to the Customs Hall for music and dancing, complimented with sophisticated food and beverage waiter service to ring in the New Year.
Customs Hall patrons will enjoy live entertainment with canapé service and designated bars, also stepping out on to the Upper Car Park and balcony to enjoy direct views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge when the fireworks are in full flow.
Paradise NYE is presented by Big a-ha!, a group of passionate individuals united by the mantra of “Live that Life”. Last night was the opening night of the newest (and coolest) rooftop bar in Sydney. Sky Terrace Bar in Star City is sure to be everyones favourite hideout this Summer.
Amazing views of the city skyline, pop up food stations, live music, cocktails and if that wasn’t enough to tempt you there is a table tennis table and badminton court for those of you who enjoy a casual hit around with your mojito.
Feast on an impressive food menu including Pulled Pork Sandwiches, Dubai Falafel AND Movenpick ice cream, all items are generously priced at $5.
If you are heading down on a Saturday night you will also have the best seat in the house for the weekly fireworks display at Darling Harbour. What is not to love about this place?
The Sky Terrace is open most Friday and Saturday nights between now and January 9th and then it will be open every night. Keep an eye on their website as it is closed on a couple of Friday nights due to private events.
Sydney Social 101 was invited to a brand new $2million 12°C wine storage and tasting lounge Artisan Wine Storage last night – http://www.artisanwinestorage.com.au .
The event encapsulated a mood of glamorous ambience and great vibe.
Jackets at the ready, the event was held in its unique 12°C facility in Sydney’s North Shore.
The evening also featured artworks by Art Equity to delight not only wine collectors but also art lovers.
More than 100 specialised media and VIP guests had also the chance to discover the Methuselah’s Cellar and private dining room complete with the only dual vertical public display of Penfolds Grange bottles (1951-2008) and magnums (1979-2008).

Christmas music given a shake-up as stars from around the World share their own Festive/holiday playlists with fans on rara.com to celebrate free trial. On the fourth day of Xmas the way to dance around the tree… is listening to my fave star’s playlist on Rara.com for FREE
Sydney Social 101 is excited to announce that a music streaming service has overhauled traditional Christmas playlists in favour of more modern mixes created with the real moods of the festive period in mind; reflecting the different ways we all celebrate Christmas in 2012. We’re HUGE fans of Xmassy songs here at SS101 HQ and we love a sneak look into the musical tastes of our celebs, so this is right up our street!
Rara.com the easy-to-use instant music service – has enlisted the help of global music stars and names from the worlds of fashion, food, sports and entertainment to update its festive playlists. These famous faces have created hand-crafted compilations inspired by their own festive experiences, to give their fans a glimpse of exactly what they’ll be listening to this Christmas
Whether that’s giving their fans tunes for a hip-hop inspired Christmas party (thanks to UK rapper Tinchy Stryder), songs to enjoy with friends during the break between Christmas and the New Year (courtesy of Home & Away actress, Rhiannon Fish), giving their fans tunes for a hip-hop and dance inspired NYE party (thanks to Actor, Model and CelebrityDJ, Didier Cohen and Actor &MTV VJ, Keiynan Lonsdale) and even a high-energy playlist to help shed those pounds after all the excess of the party season (created by music artist and XFactor judge, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, as well as Urban Pop artist Timomatic), these new playlists have it covered, whatever mood you’re in.
Other playlists include music for driving home to see family during the festive period (put together by Australia’s Next Top Model judge, Charlotte Dawson), songs to recharge after NYE and get ready for 2013 with (compiled by Media Commentator and Entertainment Editor-at-Large at News.com.au, Melissa Hoyer), and even tunes to reflect on the good times from 2012 (from musician Brian McFadden).
The move comes as rara.com gives the gift of music and launches its seven day free trial so these playlists – and many more already created by some of the biggest rock, pop, and urban artists in the world – are available to all completely free of charge.
Nick Massey, CEO, rara.com said, “We’re really excited to be working with all of these big names who are all passionate about music, to deliver an early Christmas present and celebrate the launch of our free trial this December. As a music service that offers songs for every moment and mood, we wanted to create interesting, hand-crafted playlists that fit how people are really feeling at this joyous, hectic, crazy time of the year. As well as these quirky festive-themes playlists we also have others curated by global music stars from all genres for our listeners to enjoy all year round.”
Until January 31st anyone can find, play and share unlimited music from millions of tracks available on rara.com, completely free, for seven days. Just log on to rara.com online and use voucher code HOLIDAY2012.
