Social spy** Major Lazer tear up Sydney Harbour for [V] Island Parties

MAJOR LAZER CHANNEL V ISLAND PARTY Photo by Oliver Minnett-5

Sydney Social 101 had the privilege of being invited to a pretty impressive party that was being held by Channel [V]. Major Lazer came, they saw, then blew the whole joint up in the most raucous Channel [V] Island Party in history. With banging tunes, dancers, backflips and a whole lot of party, the dance heavyweights took over Sydney Harbour for an exclusive DJ set last night.

The Major Lazer crew are notorious for their explosive, mind-blowing shows, but no one had any idea just what was in store for them when Diplo, Jillionaire and Walshy Fire got on the Channel [V] Island. From the moment they hit the stage, they commanded the crowd, tearing through a ferocious set of Major Lazer tracks, remixes and sure-fire bangers that had everyone working it low.

The boys, flanked by their trademark dancers, came to party and it wasn’t long before the shirts were off (crowd included) and Diplo was in the water after backflipping off the island. The debauchery was next level, minds were lost and it was all over far too soon.

This is the summer of [V] Island Parties – exclusive gigs on Channel [V]’s very own floating island. Coming to you direct from Sydney Harbour, we have some of the world’s best artists lining up to party with you

AUSSIE CELEBS TEAM UP IN FIGHT AGAINST BAD SPOTS THIS SUMMER, PROVIDING AUSTRALIANS WITH $150,000 IN FREE SKIN CANCER CHECKS AND RAISING MONEY FOR SKIN CANCER RESEARCH

20140110-144105.jpg

Aussie media personalities, Fifi Box, Emma Freedman, Hayden Quinn and Bondi Rescue lifeguards Greg Bishop, Tom Bunting and Brad Malyon, have teamed up for Invisible Zinc Spot Check Month – encouraging Australians to check their skin for bad spots this January. Launching with a nationwide competition today, Friday January 10, 2014, Invisible Zinc Spot Check Month sees $150,000 worth of free skin cancer checks being offered at clinics around the country.

The six Aussie celebs got together to film an online video – which for every share on Facebook, $1 has been pledged to fund the Genome Project(1) – to highlight the importance of skin checks and further aid the detection and prevention of skin cancer. The Genome Project is an ambitious national research program into the diagnosis and treatment of some types of skin cancer.

With skin cancer Australia’s most common cancer and the country having one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world*, skin health has never been so important than at the height of the Aussie summer. Having grown up by the beach, it’s something that Bondi Rescue lifeguard, Greg Bishop, is very aware of.

“Being on the beach every day, you see people being pretty unsafe in the sun,” says Greg. “I’d say we’ve all underestimated the strength of the sun in Australia sometimes, so have almost certainly overexposed yourself at one time or another. That’s why I think it’s really important all Aussies have their skin checked regularly. Good spots can turn to bad spots without you noticing and the old adage is definitely true – prevention is better than a cure.”

“I’m not sure my generation has quite learnt what damage the sun can do to your skin,” Emma Freedman adds, “which really is appalling. We need to continue to push the point that sun protection is an ‘always’, not just a ‘sometimes’.”

Part of the key to helping ensure long-term skin health is via early skin cancer detection and prevention, which is why Invisible Zinc and MoleMap are providing 400 of the normally $375 full body skin cancer checks for free to Australians across the country this month. MoleMap is a leading skin cancer detection service with clinics throughout Australia, New Zealand and the USA.

What’s On: JAGWAR MA HIT THE SEVEN SEAS FOR SOL SUMMER OF SIX

Screen Shot 2014-01-10 at 11.45.37 AM

The Sol Summer of Six returns to Sydney next Sunday 19th January 2014, heading out to sea for “The Island of Forbidden Love”, one of the biggest parties our Harbour has ever seen with hit band Jagwar Ma ready to rock the boat.

The brand new, state-of-the-art Aqua Club, which finds its home on a floating barge, will be picking up Sydney’s party elite for the third hot event in this summer’s series, with Sol transforming the venue into the hottest, most exclusive party of the year!

The Aqua Club will feature all the vibrant, romantic colours that the Sol Summer of Six parties are known for, inspired by their love for the sights, sounds and culture of Mexico. The club will be adorned with love themed decorations. Romantic, Mexican floral pieces will frame the bar, fairy lights will be strung around, Sol beer bottles will dangle from the Sol Mates door and the Mexican woven stools will throw pinks and purples all throughout the barge to give this Island of Forbidden Love the atmosphere it deserves.

Armed with the promise of a few tricks and treats up their sleeves, other boats will be attached to the barge and a giant 9 metre high water slide called the “atomic drop” will ensure that guests armed with their cossies are able to fall in love with the Sydney harbour again, again and… again.

Providing the anticipated grooves for the day, giving all dancers in attendance a chance to show off their moves to someone special, will be one of Sydney’s most loved bands, Jagwar Ma, who spent 2013 touring the world off the back of their critically acclaimed, smash hit album Howlin’. They’ll be sure to get everyone dancing and we can’t guarantee that the dance floor won’t become a place for romancin’.

Troy Douglas, the man behind the much anticipated venue, is excited to show off Sydney newest harbour bar to the VIP crowd, “We want everyone to have a great time, to fall in love with summer all over again. It’s a place you can sit inside or outside with a cocktail in hand, enjoying our open air roof terrace while you look across the beautiful harbor. We know you won’t be disappointed.”

The Aqua Club’s luxury taxi service will give all guests the VIP treatment on arrival, with their unique boats able to pick up and drop off their guests from wharfs, beaches and anywhere where the land meets the sea, running every 30 minutes.

With the newest venue in Sydney at their disposal, organisers are promising an unforgettable event, with the hottest music, the best food and the opportunity to rub shoulders with Sydney’s elite, all there to spread the love of Summer with Sol.

Now in its second year, Sol Summer of Six is an incredible calendar of events that Sol run to celebrate the spirit of Mexico. Last year saw secret parties on pirate ships, catamarans, roof tops and in aquariums – and this year, Sol continues to deliver the best parties in the coolest locations Australia has ever seen.

What’s On: “CANTINA DEL SOL” KEEPS THE SPIRIT OF MEXICO ALIVE IN SYDNEY

Screen Shot 2013-10-17 at 10.58.11

Thanks to the success of the vibrant Cantina del Sol pop up, Sol Beer is keeping the spirit of Mexico alive in Sydney as it continues to run the colourful cantina until the last weekend of October .

Guests have been treated to a Mexican sensation as Potts Point’s Villa Bar & Kitchen transformed into a Mexican escape, with influences drawn from the style and flair of iconic Mexican artist Frida Khalo – a name synonymous with Mexican arts and culture.

Raul Gonzales, part–owner of popular Kings Cross venue The Backroom, and Bondi Canteen part-owner Shane Moran were tasked with bringing Sol’s vision of Mexican sights, sounds and flavours to life. Gonzales says, “We were thrilled with the results of the opening weekend.

“Our aim was to bring an authentic side of Mexico – from the music to the décor, the drinks and of course the food. We are excited to announce our collaboration with celebrity chef, Phillip Davenport.”

For the last seven years, Davenport has been at the helm of the famous ocean side restaurant and bar KU DE TA, in Bali Indonesia, winning various awards and cooking for many high profile patrons. His global success has been backed by the release of his television series The Toque 12, released on the Australian Network. Davenport will be showcase his take on Mexican infused flavours this weekend to the cantina with a very special menu, “I’m bringing an authentic taste of Mexico and its street vendors. Think honest, rich flavours with a fresh twist.”

Cantina del Sol marks the first time that Sol Beer has opened a pop up bar in Sydney, this is just one part of an incredible calendar of events Sol will run every year to celebrate the spirit of Mexico. From the Sol Summer of Six to endless secret parties on pirate ships, catamarans, roof tops and in aquariums, Sol has become associated with adventure and discovery; the joy of making the most out of life.

With this reputation behind them, Gonzales says of this venue, “We want to take people away from it all, come and relax and enjoy the authentic world of Mexico in this new pop up bar.”
