SOCIAL SPY** Piper-Heidsieck Spring Carnival Bar

Hosted by Michelle Leslie at the Bellevue Paddington

Sydney Social, VIP and celeb guests indulged in oysters, canapés and Piper-Heidsieck bubbles at The Bellevue in Paddington for the VIP Launch of the Piper-Heidsieck Spring Carnival Bar last night.

On a perfect balmy evening guests arrived early, and stayed late, at the beautifully-designed Piper-Heidsieck Spring Carnival Bar at the Bellevue Hotel in Paddington. The Piper bubbles were free flowing with Bellevue co-owners Ned Kelly and Paddy Coughlan set to order another pallet of Piper well ahead of schedule to re-stock the bar.

Located upstairs at the Bellevue the bar is decked with blooming spring flowers, fun murals and a turfed outdoor terrace embodying a fresh floral feel. Michelle Leslie, Ambassador for the Piper-Heidsieck Spring Carnival Bar welcomed familiar faces beautifully dressed in Steven Khalil (who designed her wedding dress).  Guests ranged from actors to DJs, designers to presenters including Michael Caton, Alyssa McClelland, Kate Peck, Roy Billing, Justine Schofield, Martin and Michelle Walsh, Courtney Roulston, Alvin Quah, Penne Dennison, Sylvia Jeffreys, Georgia Sinclair, Mieke Buchan, Amber Renae just to name a few. Michelle shared her excitement at being the ambassador for the new Piper-Heidsieck Spring Carnival bar that is located in the upstairs space at the Bellevue that she personally styled and designed.  Saying, “I’m really looking forward to spending more time here over the coming weeks, and to enjoying more Piper-Heidsieck bubbles.  Marilyn Monroe once said that every night she went to bed with a drop of Chanel No.5 and woke up with a glass of Piper-Heidsieck so I think it’s my duty as a Piper ambassador to uphold her mantra.”

The French bubbles were a huge hit with guests, with the canapé menu matched and including freshly shucked oysters with eschalot vinegar, char grilled sirloin steak with mushroom sauce and fries and warm salad of grilled polenta with cumin roasted beetroot, Persian feta & salsa verde.

Filled to capacity the gorgeous crowd bought all the fun and glamour of the spring carnival to the bar, creating an amazing vibe. Set to continue as a spring carnival racing season hot spot, the Piper-Heidsieck Spring Carnival Bar will host a ‘Ladies Luncheon’, Saturday October 26 (limited spots still available) with Melbourne Cup day celebrations a sell out within days of going on-sale.

SOCIAL SPY** Toi et Moi Sydney & Le Super Shop Launch

20130502-113348.jpg

French women have always been seen in a league of their own when it comes to elegance – they invented chic, their accent alone can turn mens legs turn to jelly and they take the fashion world by storm, so with the launch of the Toi et Moi Sydney’s latest summer collection you can now capture the magic of Parisian style right here Down Under!

20130502-113522.jpg

Last night, the Parisian-inspired fashion label launched their cool new ‘Une Romance Moderne’ summer and ‘Metropolitain’ Resort 2013 collections at Paddington’s L’etoile Restaurant, owned by ‘My Kitchen Rules’ celebrity chef Manu Feildel.

20130502-113409.jpg

Set against a romantic leafy backdrop, guests were ushered into the court at the back of the restaurant, decorated with flowers by Ashleigh Stewart for Clemetine Posy, for a sneak peek of the new range. Fancy hor d’oeurves and Jacob’s Creek wine made the rounds, as attendees waited with anticipation for the show to start.

Models sported Bardot-inspired hair, created by Scott Sloan of Sloans of Lane Cove, and took to the catwalk wearing statement dresses with bold print, bright colours that oozed a European style.

20130502-113559.jpg

Guests were then wished ‘bon apetit’ as they were treated to an intimate candle-lit dinner, and big brown gift boxes were filled with goodies, including a one-off vintage vinyl frame directly from Paris itself!

Toi et Moi first entered the fashion world just over three years ago, and has since evolved from casual T-shirts to a sleek, classic women’s wear which now reaches fashionistas on a global scale, as the brand is available in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and now America – apparently items have been flying off the shelf quicker than you can say ‘oui’!

The owner, and mother of four, Gill Lawrence frequents Paris twice a year, for inspiration and in January the brand celebrated its introduction into superstore Myer.

20130502-113838.jpg

Coinciding with the event, was the announcement of the launch of Le Super Shop, the online home of Toi et Moi Sydney and the marketplace for other cool, unique French finds, curated by Gill and her French husband, Thierry Lavirotte.

20130502-113920.jpg

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to get your hands on this über cool collection which infuses French soul with a laid back Aussie twist.

Suburb in the Spotlight – Paddington

This week’s suburb in the spotlight is none other than my home suburb of Paddington. I have had the very fortunate pleasure of living in Paddington for the past 2 ½ years and I can safely say that it is one of my favorite suburbs in the whole of Sydney, it reminds me a little of home.

The stunning Victorian terraces and hidden pubs remind me of West Didsbury and Notting Hill. There are many things that make this relatively unknown suburb special. For once in Australia it’s not the beach. Paddington is located about 1.5 K from the city and about 2.5K from Bondi Beach, so realistically has the best of both worlds!

The pubs that make Paddington a favorite for ‘pub crawls’ include:

The London

Nestled in between the Paddington Inn and The Royal, this little pub come bar provide the perfect location to catch up with your friends if you’re not sure what the weather is going to be like. A fully covered outside terrace provides shelter from the rain, whilst a bar area provides great atmosphere.

The drinks are reasonable and the pizzas are delicious! For a weeknight catch up with friends or a warm first date in a non pretentious, comfortable establishment – this is your guy!

The Royal

The Royal at Fiveways is the local of Paddington residents who want to head to a comfortable pub with reasonable food – there’s also the restaurant upstairs that has amazing food, and nothing over $30. As you head up the stairs you come across the Elephant Bar – which to be honest is more of a cocktail lounge with comfortable seating, and relaxed music and atmosphere. Head up to the top floor and your greeted with the most amazing view of Sydney’s skyline and Rushcutter’s Bay! The perfect place to take newbies to Sydney to admire the view with a beer in hand! 237 Glenmore Rd, Paddington 2021. ( 02 9331 2604).

The Paddington Inn

This is one of the more well-known bars in Paddington, located on Oxford Street is has a more up tempo atmosphere from Thursday – Sunday. It has a modest bar venue that is regularly updated – there’s nothing on there over $25 and they are usually a hearty meal! If you’re looking for somewhere to dance the night away over the weekend, the Paddington Inn is a good shout. Oxford Street, Paddington 2021.

The Four in Hand

If you’re into sport and pigs on a spit, this is for you! Regular screenings of all the latest in ball sports, but don’t get confused, it’s no sports bar. It is a very popular eatery and has a great quiz night on a Tuesday. The restaurant is renowned for its food by chef Colin Fassnidge’s. It’s well-priced and boasts a tasty selection. 105 Sutherland St, Paddington 2021. (02 9326 2254).

The Lord Dudley

Another one of my favorites, mostly as it’s relatively unknown, apart from the locals and residents. It has four separate bar area, it is very reminiscent of a good old British Public House, with roaring fireplaces and cosy surroundings and a typical pub grub menu with a fancy twist. 236 Jersey Rd, Woollahra 2025. (02 9327 5399).

The Grand National

This is another one of Paddington’s pubs that lurks in the back streets and is favored by the locals. There is absolutely no pretence at all, an inviting atmosphere pulls you in from the dreary Elizabeth Street the comfortable hum of conversation and friendly service. It also boats a bistro that thankfully offers classic pub dishes that taste amazing and aren’t to heavy on the funds! 161 Underwood St, Paddington 2021. (02 9363 4557).

The Fringe Bar

The Fringe Bar is all about fun and great value. It offers stand-up comedy Monday and trivia on a Tuesday. Thursdays, offer both $10 all-you-can-eat pizza and $8 cocktails. If you’re wanting to bust some moves on a weekend, The Fringe is a great call after you’ve frequented the Paddington Inn. 106 Oxford St, Paddington 2021.

In addition to The Fringe bar offering all that is has to offer in terms of food and liquor, it also transforms itself into a bustling fashion and craft market on a Saturday! Head down for one-off finds from local designers and artists. If you’re thinking of heading down, scroll to the bottom for a giveaway opportunity with Frunique and “Market Special” for customers at Paddington Markets offering $20 off our Retail Prices on each of our Jewellery Stands and also provide free gift wrapping.

The Bellevue

The Bellevue’s not what you’d call a slick pub – but that is part of its charm. Happy hour runs from 5.30pm to 6.30pm Monday to Friday and if you if you need to drown your sorrows after a hard week at the office there’s $3 bubbles all day every Friday. 159 Hargrave St, Paddington 2021. (02 9363 2293).

Paddo Bowls

Yours Truly

One thing that always surprised me was the interest in lawn bowls over here. Back home in the UK it was older men at their local British legion who you’d find playing bowls on a Saturday afternoon! Well Paddo Bowls is one of the original purveyors of Sydney’s social barefoot bowling trend – so much so the club has practically traded its white-dressed bowling oldies for bowling enthusiast, cute shoe-free professionals – all with a jog of beer or Pimms in two. 2 Quarry St, Paddington 2021. (02 9363 1150). There are three sessions Sat& Sun 11am & 8pm. $12.
